Design
The CU515 comes in a standard, black clamshell shape, with a stylish, cool exterior and elegant interior. A large 176 x 220 color display that supports more than 65,000 colors dominates the inside of the top cover, while the outside cover sports a supplementary 96 x 64 LCD display that shows the time, call information, battery and signal strength, and more. Most of the phone's features and onscreen menus are controlled by a five-way button on the handset's backlit control pad. And neither communication or storage are a problem thanks to the integrated USB slot and expandable microSD/TransFlash memory card slot, which supports up to 4 GB. Lastly, the phone includes an internal antenna that's safely tucked away, keeping the design compact and portable.

Calling Features
The CU515's internal phone book can hold up to 500 contacts, while the built-in speakerphone makes it easy for your whole family to chat with grandma at once. The phone also includes Push-to-Talk functionality, which lets you instantly speak with one or up to 30 people at once. And because the CU515 is Bluetooth enabled, you can configure wireless headsets to the phone and enjoy total hands-free operation. Other calling features include voice dialing--which makes calling your friends, family, and associates as easy as saying their names--and a host of built-in ringtones.

Messaging, Internet, and Tools
The CU515 is a messaging and wireless Internet powerhouse. With support for AT&T's HSDPA network built right into the phone, you'll be streaming and downloading at speeds so fast your head will spin. More significantly, the phones 1.3-megapixel camera and video recorder opens up a whole new world of message opportunities. You can send photos, graphics, and videos to friends, or, when used in combination with AT&T's Video Share, you can share real-time streaming video with family. The latter feature is terrific should you want to share baby's first steps with your in-laws or show your pal the winning touchdown in real time.

The phone also supports instant messaging via AOL Instant Messenger, Windows Live, and Yahoo! Messenger. Text messaging is about as easy as it can get on a numeric keypad thanks to the phone's T9 predictive text technology, which anticipates and finishes your words as you type. And the CU515 is ideal if you need basic Internet access, as it includes a built-in WAP 2.0 web browser and an e-mail client that supports Yahoo!, AOL, MS Live, and POP3/SMTP protocols.

A number of handy software tools are also bundled with the CU515, including a calculator with a unit conversion feature, a calendar, an alarm clock, date finder, a notepad, and a tip calculator. Or you can use the phone's Bluetooth capability to set up a wireless link with a Bluetooth accessory--such as a wireless headset--or connect to a computer or handheld device to exchange and synchronize data. The unit also supports USB mass storage, meaning you can use your phone as a portable hard drive, making for easy file transfers between phone and PC.

Imaging and Entertainment
With such features as a built-in audio player, stereo Bluetooth headphone capability, and an integrated camera, the CU515 shines in the entertainment department. When the feeling hits, you can jam out to your favorite music on the unit's advanced MP3 player, which supports MP3, WMA, AAC, and AAC+/eAAC+ files. Because the CU515 also sports a microSD/TransFlash memory card slot, you can easily load up all your favorite music and bring it with you (cards sold separately). Additional audio features include a customizable equalizer with visualization, playlist management, and the ability to sync music from your PC to your phone using Napster or eMusic.

The phone's 1.3-megapixel camera, meanwhile, offers such features as an 8x digital zoom, video recording, customizable shutter tones, brightness and white balance controls, and an image editor that lets you resize, crop, color, and rotate your photos.

Classic Design, Simple to use

A classic style device that is simple to use. The key pad is large enough to be easy to press but not too big. It is a phone, meant to be used as a phone. Call quality is crystal clear and the volume control is way above average. The push to talk feature gets annoying when you accidentally push the button, but beyond that it is a great phone.

lovin it so far

I'm new to ATT, I was a Verizon customer until about two days ago. I used to have the LG8600, and it suited all of my needs. The battery was excellent, reception was decent and it was durable. I had the Motorola v9m through Verizon for about a month, which is an EXCELLENT phone if not for the terrible battery life (and while the weight of it was fine, it just seemed too large of a phone). I got this phone at the recommendation of the ATT representative who said the reception, battery life, and durability are rated well. So far I love the phone, and have no complaints except that I wish the exterior display wasn't all black (blends with the phone) and was just a teeny bit bigger.

An Excellent First Cell Phone

I recently purchased my first cell phone. The phone I chose was the LG CU 515. Even though I had never owned a cell phone before, I knew the features and style of phone I wanted. The phone is a nice looking phone with a very sleek design, that functions well, and is available at an affordable price (I should know--finances is one of the reasons it took me so long to purchase a cell phone). The sound is excellent and I have yet had any problems in not being able to hear someone one the other end. The phone can be used to completely access the Internet; includes a camera; can record short videos; and is able to store music, games, and other documents. Even more music and data can be stored if one purchases a separate 4Gb SDHC card. The LG CU 515 is also bluetooth compatible, though I did not purchase the blue tooth piece.

The only real complaint I have about the phone is that there is a side button for Push-To-Talk (PTT--I also get this feature to pop up every now and again when I'm in the menu and push a button that doesn't access something). Under AT&T, PTT is something extra that must be paid for. Frankly, I find it rather annoying. It's another sign that advertising and marketing have gone insane in our culture. It's very annoying when you're trying to turn the volume up or down or turn on the speaker phone or use the phone light to see the question asking "please initialize PTT".

I have owned the LG CU 515 for three months and other than the PTT complaint, I have no complaints and think it is a very fine phone to own, especially for one's first cell phone.

FRAGILE

This was the worst phone I have ever owned. I accidently dropped it two months after I got it, and it split in half! Other phones I've had have dropped, with barely a scratch. AT & T said there was nothing I could do, and I had to buy a new phone--NOT the same one...

The phone's reception was poor compared to my prior phone...

Terrible reception & audio!!!

I have been extremely disappointed and frustrated with my new LG CU515 cellphone and here's why: it has terrible audio!! Its plenty loud enough, but the sound is muffled (worsens the louder you turn up the volume) and I am forever asking people to repeat things. And its even worse when I use a handsfree headset (and I've tried several). Not only that, but dropped calls have increased exponentially since getting this phone. No point in reviewing any other features...when you have a cellphone with poor reception and crummy audio- is there really anything else that matters?

So far, so good...

I have had this phone for a couple of weeks and I like it so far. The interface is a little different from what I am used to, but I like the phone. Calls are clear and most do not know I am using a cell phone. Speaker phone is easy to use and sounds good. Great camera, and good screen. Smudges easily but no big deal.

Sticking with a company you trust no longer the best option

When I got this phone less than a year ago (directly from AT&T), there were a couple of things that bugged me. Mainly, there was an annoying beeping when I was on a conference call. Exchanging for the same model revealed it to be a problem with the phones in general, not the handset.

In recent days, the phone has started to make a static sound before it starts to ring, and the calls are no longer always clear.

But what shocked me most was that after a year of calling and texting, the numbers are FALLING OFF. I've never had this problem with another phone.

I thought at first that it might be a problem with my unit, but the fact that AT&T no longer carries this or any LG flip phone on their website leads me to believe that this may not be the case.

In short, while LG once was the only brand I'd even consider for cell phones, this unit has turned me around.

a few good things, a couple not so good

This is a nice phone. Nice looking, nice functioning, and nicely priced. The sound is great during calls and while using it as a MP3 player. The bluetooth file transfer between my laptop and phone seems pretty speedy. Having video recording capability is nice for someone who only had a 640x480 still camera on my last phone. I have yet to try out the stated 4Gb SD card to see if it works (I could only find SDHC 4Gb cards so I'll soon find out if the phone is SDHC compatible). I'll update the review when I receive the card. [update: the phone is compatible with the 4Gb SDHC card.]

The things that bother me are the PTT button as the other reviewer mentioned and the lack of voice dialing on the phone. Yes, AT&T does offer voice dialing on this phone, but it is only through their network so you have to pay extra for it. I HATE it when corporations make you pay extra for something that should be installed on the phone. I assumed that in this day and age, voice dialing would be standard on all phones. Never should I assume anything with electronics and corporations.

The PTT button as the other reviewer mentioned is a definite hassle. My last phone I always opened one handed by cradling it with my fingers while prying the lid open with my thumb. This phone I can cradle, but as soon as I put any pressure on the left side, I immediately push the PTT button, thus negating the advantage of opening it one handed. Either I will have to immobilize the button by dribbling some superglue around the seam of the button, or sand down the button with my dremel to make it concave. What a PITA!

As a visual design, the flush camera lens on the face is beautiful. Functionally, it either should have been recessed or a raised ridge put around it to minimize scuffing of the lens. One of the industrial designers dropped the ball on this one.

I like the phone, don't get me wrong. I'm still within the trial period so I could bring it back if it was really a POJ. I think I'll keep it though as it is a vast improvement over my last phone. That, and I've already begun the task of entering all my contacts...

UPDATE: Feb 9 09- I decided to keep the phone. I eventually bought a clear plastic shell for the phone and only installed the cover on the flip portion of the phone for two reasons: The edge on the plastic protector gives my thumb something to grasp when opening the phone one handed, and the case protects the lens of the camera, preventing scuffing while in my pocket. It added negligible thickness to the phone since I left the rear portion of the protector off the phone. It was, i think, 4$ with shipping. Had I seen the black one, I would've gotten it instead of the clear:

overall, I'm pretty happy with it and probably would recommend it to a friend. I'm keeping the 3 star review though since my original complaints are (to me) glaring flaws by the designers/developers.

Almost perfect for me

I have had this phone for a little over a month now and so far, I'm happy. I was in the market for an upgrade and did not want anything too fancy, but also wanted something with a few more features than my last one. I'm not ready for a "smartphone" now, but this will definitely hold me over until then.

After researching several phones, it was a tossup between this and the Nokia 6085A. The slim design and features of the 515 won me over.

This is a nice, inexpensive and simple, yet sleek, stylish phone that is ultra compact.In fact, the CU 515 is so light I forget that it is even in my pocket. I have no problems with reception and call clarity so far and in my area 3G coverage has been consistent. Additionally, the battery lasts a few days between charges, so that is another plus.

I don't text much, but when I do, the buttons are raised just right. My only gripes are not being able to change the external display and as mentioned, the PTT is sensitive and poorly placed. Other than those, I am extremely pleased with this phone.

If you are looking for something simple and a cheap alternative to the Razr, then definitely give this phone a try.

pretty but lots of glitches

I purchased this phone after speaking with an att representative. I was looking to upgrade my "old faithful" phone for one with better clarity and a better camera. Well, I must say the clarity is a bit better, and I havent dropped any calls in the two months I've owned the phone. However, I think the camera is actually worse, I don't know if Im doing something wrong, but I can't seem to get a clear picture with it. The things that are really annoying, though, make this cell phone one I cannot recommend for anyone who is not interested in PTT. I hit this large PTT button every time I open the phone, and must cancel the connection, or pay for something I just have no use for. Another problem is the tiny slot for the charger, which is covered by the flimsiest piece of plastic I've ever seen.
